When you need to be more and do less

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI have been humbled again by my body. It always lets me know when my stress levels are too high and it’s time to slow down.

Yesterday, I got the clear message that I need to stop, rest and recharge or face the consequences. Since I have fibromyalgia, the consequences include all over body pain including headaches and skin sensitivity that land me in bed unable to do anything but hope to sleep. After the worst is over, there are still a few days of pain hangover including brain fog, lethargy and emotional numbness. It’s usually a week long event. It’s not pleasant at all, and I’m entirely unproductive and unhappy.

The good news is that I’ve gotten better at listening to my body, and I can read the signs indicating that flare-up is on the way and can choose to stop and rest before it spirals out of my control.

Full blown flare-ups are usually a sign that I have too much on my plate, have been dealing with upsetting situations, and I haven’t had enough time to rest. Even though I have been meditating 2-3 times a day, giving myself Reiki, exercising daily and eating extremely well – stress still takes its toll.

Sometimes life is just hard, and there really isn’t anything you can do to make it easier. Difficult times are when healthy practices like meditation, time in nature, and exercise are crucial even if they don’t feel like they are doing enough. Spending time with loved ones and supportive people is important too.

And rest. Sometimes you just need way more rest than usual. I was reminded of that last night. I think in our culture we lean into doing to find a solution for stress. We focus on what else can I do to make this stress go away?

Yet, what we really need to alleviate stress during difficult times is to lean into being. Being quiet, being at rest, being in nature, being with loved ones, being in meditation, being in the moment, being with children etc…

  1. I love your posts, Joanna! So honest, raw & inspirational. As you know, I’ve been more stressed out then usual & have been trying the technique of being instead of doing & it has helped a ton these passed few days. Stress drains my mind, body & spirit & makes me just want to curl up in a ball & stay in bed. However, I have gotten out there & did what I’ve had too but have been knowing when I need to take some time for me & just BE.
    Thank you so much for these posts & please keep them coming. You are truly an inspiration.
