My Reiki journey through pain to healing – and maybe yours, too.

Reiki has been my passion for most of the last decade, and it’s been a joyful delight to pass on what I’ve learned to others since 2006.

My personal journey with Reiki started in 2003, and in those early years I was focused on healing my chronic belly pain.  For as long as I can remember, I had belly aches – not just the awful monthly menstrual cramps that started in junior high but the constant chronic belly aches after each meal due to food allergies that began in my early teens.  I gave my belly Reiki every night to ease the digestion pain, and especially during my horrible menstrual cramps, as I worked with food, herbs, and meditation to heal my body.  By the time I finished my Reiki Master Teacher training in 2006, it was like a had a whole new lease on life.  I felt fantastic… for a while.

As it goes for many of my sisters with chronic pain, our bodies turn to pain to signal that something is wrong.  In my experience, most of my sisters with chronic pain tend to be overachievers and caregivers like me at some point in their life or another. We get really adept at pushing  past our limits, ignoring our needs, and keep on going until our body *screams* at us in pain to stop.  In my early 30’s, I developed chronic pain in my 2nd chakra again.  The stress I internalized as my marriage fell apart settled in my pelvic floor muscles, and, as my grandmother before me did in her 30’s, I developed osteoarthritis – for me in my lumbar spine and SI joints.  Ouch, ouch, ouch! For a while, pain was all encompassing in my life.  I actually went through three rounds of physical therapy and a lot of talk therapy to recuperate from that really stressful time leading up to and past my divorce.   I also did self-Reiki every day and received Reiki and bodywork from other practitioners as part of my self-healing regimen.

The emotional and physical pain this time was so much worse than when I was younger that I was incapable of working for a number of months. Reiki was my life-saver. As disappointing and discouraging it was not to be able to work, not working was a blessing, too. I spent as much time as I needed every morning giving myself Reiki until the pain and stiffness eased, and my heart became somewhat at peace.  Some mornings, this took hours.  I fell asleep every night with heating pads and giving myself Reiki on all the sore spots from physical therapy and exercising to recondition my body.  Reiki was an integral part of my healing.  In the fall of 2009, when I went back to work – it was very part time, a few hours a week.  I slept a lot, did a lot of Reiki and meditation to help my body and spirit heal, and I worked a little.  Each month, it got a little bit better.

Flash forward to 2012, and I am a completely different person, pain wise.  The weather still flares up my arthritis, and sometimes I feel like my spine is 95 years old when I try to get out of bed and can’t stand up straight yet.  The fibromyalgia means I have to be really careful not to over-do it when I am exercising – moderation is the key or I run out of feel good chemicals and the pain creeps in. Certain foods that I am allergic and sensitive to will, without fail, tip me into a pain flare-up, if I consume them. Stress definitely flares up the pain as well, but I am no longer living with daily, debilitating pain.  I am no longer taking pain medication.  I know my limits, and I am constantly, carefully, stretching the edges of my limitations to grow stronger, more energized and more a participant in my own life.  Reiki has been the one constant through this journey through pain.  Reiki has helped me unravel the layers of stress, tension, emotional baggage and let it all go.  Now when I do my morning Reiki and meditation, it takes just 5 minutes to clear and align my life force energy for optimal flow and energy, to release the morning stiffness from arthritis, to release stress and worries.  I am working full-time in my own business, and I’m in a challenging graduate school program.  It is Reiki and keeping my life force energy strong and flowing that allows me to do this, despite having a body with challenges the average 36 year old does not have.

Reiki has not only been what helped me heal my body, mind and spirit, it’s also woven into my career.  Teaching Reiki has become a new passion of mine because nothing beats seeing others heal their bodies, spirits, and lives by integrating Reiki.  The icing on the cake is when the Reiki taps into something deep in my students, revealing a calling to help others and go into business for themselves. The heart-centered entrepreneurship that I teach was born from Reiki, from my Reiki students asking for guidance on how to follow their dreams.  The Reiki concepts and way of being are integrated into the way of the heart-centered entrepreneur.  I have seen Reiki clear away creative and spiritual blocks, fear and doubt, in addition to the magic it works on healing the body.  It can jump start any life transition you want to make.

This fall could be your chance to heal, grow and blossom with Reiki.  I am offering Reiki certification courses at all levels this fall, and I specialize in teaching people who need to heal and those who are called to facilitate others healing. Perhaps one of these classes s for you?

Reiki 1 is a gentle type of bodywork that aids emotional harmony, encourages relaxation and stimulates the body’s natural healing processes. Reiki Master certification with me emphasizes developing intuition and trusting insights from your Inner Wisdom.  Reiki Master students in particular are passionate about making Reiki a part of their lifestyle, not just a part of their career. Reiki Master training requires commitment, discipline and a willingness to grow personally, professionally and spiritually.  Usually, students know in their heart if they are called to become a Reiki Master.  The training program consists of 100 hours of practice over the course of 6 months.  Classroom time includes lecture, discussion and hands-on techniques.  Students practice techniques at home on self and volunteer clients over the course the of 6 months. Case studies are discussed in class and turned in for evaluation.  The Fall 2012 Reiki Master program meets Sundays from 5-8pm starting Sept 23, finishing in February 2013.  Find out more on my website, or email me for an application.
